Beyond the Finish line

Beatie Deutsch defies stereotypes, her athletic journey taking a unique path. By her twenty-sixth birthday, she had four children, yet hadn't explored professional racing. Juggling the demands of motherhood, work, and housework left her craving a personal outlet. So, she laced up her running shoes, initially just for the pure joy of it. But soon, she discovered something unexpected—a hidden talent.

Her first amateur marathon in 2016 saw her finish in an impressive 3:27, setting the stage for future triumphs.

In 2017, while seven months pregnant with her fifth child, Beatie completed the Tel Aviv Marathon in 4:08, a testament to her determination. Her 2019 Tiberias National Championship victory solidified her status as the fastest Israeli female athlete. But it's her unwavering commitment to her religious beliefs that truly sets her apart.

As a devout Jew, she adheres strictly to modesty standards wearing a knee-length skirt, full t-shirt, and head covering during races. Despite the impact on her race times, her dedication to modest attire (tzniut) remains unshakeable. On social media, she proudly identifies as "Marathon Mother," emphasizing that her most cherished role is being a mother.

Beatie's humility and deep faith shine through in every aspect of her life. She sees her talents not as personal achievements, but as gifts from a Higher power, given to her for a purpose. Beatie views her growing career as an opportunity to inspire other religious female athletes, showing that success can be attained without compromising one's beliefs.

Despite earning a spot in the 2020 Olympics, Beatie faced a tough decision when she learned that the marathon event fell on Shabbat. Despite the disappointment, her faith remained unwavering. She understands that her mission is bigger than personal accomplishments—it's about sharing the light of her Creator with the world.

Reflecting on her journey, Beatie remarked, “Of course it is [hard to miss out on a major opportunity because of Shabbat], but G-d gave me this gift to fulfill a purpose, who knows, maybe that purpose is to show what I am willing to sacrifice for Shabbos.” Every step she takes, every sacrifice she makes, is a testament to her unwavering devotion—a commitment that transcends the world of sports.
